We are very active in the multi- residential use building for both market and social housing projects. We are active in supporting social projects as a way of giving back to the communities over the past 25 years wherever possible.
Many projects now use the recently developed Step Code parameters for design and require extensive energy modelling. We work closely with passive housing and energy modeling requirements of each specific project to meet the requirements in the BC Housing interim energy targets. We understand BC Housing requirements and have knowledge of the Step Code such that our Engineers are able to provide valuable input during the design process.

Why do we need to hire an Engineer?

The new code 2018 BC Building Code has introduced changes to the way homes are to be designed. These requirements are intended so that the house is designed to perform safely in extreme events such as code level earthquakes and high winds. The residential section of the building code; Part 9 is intended for non-engineers to design homes. However the new complexity of Part 9 has meant that Structural Engineers are being asked to be involved in home designs more frequently. Earlier versions of the residential section of the building code (Part 9) inadequately addressed the extreme events described above, to a level acceptable to our Association, EGBC. Although the new code is an improvement, this is still the case. Therefore advances in best practice, has meant that Structural Engineers providing structural design services for a new home or renovation, are set to a higher standard than the minimum outlined in the residential portion of the building code. You will therefore find that your builder may find some of our requirements unfamiliar and possibly more costly than they are used to. We therefore suggest that before commencing construction you meet with us and the builder to go through these requirements so that the most cost effective solution is provided to ensure the safe performance of your new home.
