Church Road Transfer Station

Parksville, BC

For the expansion of its current facility in Parksville the Regional District of Nanaimo engaged Herold Engineering Limited in conjunction with Aecom for the design of the master-plan and additional buildings and renovations to the existing transfer station building. The project was to be designed to LEED standards and achieved the LEED Gold award upon completion of the project.

A new 900 m2 size pre-engineered steel building is now functioning as food waste and garbage collection, with the 1066 m2 existing building converted mainly to yard waste disposal. Both buildings incorporate daylight infiltration to translucent wall and roof panels eliminating need for use of lights fixtures throughout most of the hours of operation.

A new elevated recycling area was also developed for easy drop off by private and commercial customers.

Two new scales, a 47 m2 scale house and new 280 m2 administration building complete the project, together with extensive site works, low maintenance type of landscaping and paving including the use of recycled asphalt. The roofs of the administration building and scale house incorporate green roofs. Solar panels have been installed for hot water consumption. A geothermal field provides heating for the administration offices.

A rain-water collection system off the roofs of the transfer station and administration buildings, supplemented by the on-site well provides the water used for floor wash of the tipping floors. All waste water is run through the on-site treatment plant for re-use in toilet flushing and wash-down functions.
